Trade-offs are a natural part of life, and business, but asking employees to make sacrifices could lead to resentment and long-term troubles for your company.

That’s the advice of Proactive Worldwide president David Kalinowski in his book The Sacrifice Paradox: How To Navigate Life’s Choices And Trade-Offs.

“The best leaders understand that sacrifices must be mutual and strategic, not forced upon employees without consideration,” said Kalinowski, an expert in competitive intelligence who advises Fortune 1000 businesses, helping them understand their vulnerabilities.

He adds that sacrifices should feel more like team-driven compromises that move everyone closer to the goal.

“In toxic workplaces, employees feel forced to sacrifice, leading to resentment,” said Kalinowski. “In healthy workplaces, sacrifices feel purposeful—as part of a collective effort.”

How can leaders ensure sacrifices are meaningful rather than draining? According to the book there are key strategies a leader can implement to approach making sacrifices in a healthy and thoughtful way:

Transparency in decision-making: Explaining why trade-offs are necessary is crucial to getting the team on board.

Provide support systems: Offering professional development and wellness programs for employees can help them see the long-term goals.

Encourage balance: Recognizing employees’ personal lives and time commitments is important. Not everyone can make the same sacrifices.

Lead by example: Leaders don’t just ask for sacrifices. They make sacrifices themselves to build a thriving, purpose-driven company culture.

Kalinowski notes that leaders in some companies have avoided mass layoffs by taking pay cuts and cutting expenses. While layoffs may be unavoidable, sacrifice from leadership can have a profound effect on the team, and create a culture where employees feel valued.

“Effective leaders understand that balancing individual and organizational needs is crucial,” Kalinowski said. “Employees will go the extra mile when they feel valued, respected, and fairly compensated for their contributions.”
